June 18, 2024 (Lemon Grove) -- A $6,000 reward is now being offered for information that leads to the arrest of a man suspected in a homicide in Lemon Grove.
 
On March 18, 2023, around 10:00 p.m., deputies from the Lemon Grove Sheriff's Substation responded to a report of a shooting in the 2800 block of Lemon Grove Avenue. While searching the area, deputies found 39-year-old Gregory Moore unconscious in a car at the intersection of Lemon Grove Avenue and San Miguel Avenue. He was later pronounced dead.
 
Sheriff's Homicide Investigators identified 34-year-old Daniel Ethridge as a suspect. He has an active arrest warrant for homicide and is believed to be associated with a local street gang.

THREE PEOPLE INJURED IN LEMON GROVE SHOOTINGS; SUSPECTS UNKNOWN

June 16, 2024 (Lemon Grove) – Two men and a woman were shot last night outside a residence near the intersection of Dain Court and Jadam Way in Lemon Grove.

Deputies from the Lemon Grove Substation and the Rancho San Diego Station responded to reports of shots fired around 9:40 p.m., but the three victims had already gone to a local hospital.

“There is currently no suspect description. No arrests have been made,”says Lieutenant Joe Barry. The victims are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the hospital and are in stable condition, he adds.

May 30, 2024 (Lemon Grove) — On May 20, the Lemon Grove City Council heard from local resident Jason Sundberg, who filed an appeal to reconsider allowing a 70-foot cell tower disguised as a broadleaf tree that will include 12 panel antennas and nine remote radio units. The tower is proposed by AT&T at 6970 San Miguel Avenue on the Christian Church of Lemon Grove’s lot.

May 26, 2024 (Lemon Grove) — An undercover operation in East County has resulted in arrest of Robert Owen, 48, on suspicion of soliciting sex from a minor.  
 
“The San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force (HTTF) investigation was initiated after concerned citizens brought bizarre postings that had been affixed to utility poles in Lemon Grove advertising the "AZ24.CO" website to the attention of law enforcement,” says Sergeant Jason Phillips with the San Diego Sheriff’s Dept.

May 22, 2024 (Lemon Grove) – The Lemon Grove City Council was presented with a resolution and appropriation by city staff on May 7 to award a contract to Preeman Roofing Inc. for a city-wide roof replacement project. This project was approved by Council back in December of 2023, which gave staff direction to advertise for bids on the construction and allocated a material contract to Garland Company, Inc. for $467,075.46.

May 22, 2024 (Lemon Grove) – A Lemon Grove family’s trip for a family wedding in New Jersey ended in a double tragedy. 

Ben Canales has started a fundraiser for his friends, Alex and Amber Gasin of Lemon Grove. The couple went to a Mets baseball game and left their 6-month-old son, Micah, with his grandfather. But a storm passed through that night, causing unimaginable devastation to the family.

4th ANNUAL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT HONORS LIFE OF 13-YEAR-OLD KILLED IN TRAGIC CAR ACCIDENT

 

April 24, 2024 (Lemon Grove) -- The Lemon Grove Recreation Center will be hosting the 4th annual 3-on-3 Trevon Harris basketball tournament on June 8, 2024, from 8:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 3131 School Lane. Basketballers must be ages 10 to 16 to participate in the tournament. 

There is no entry fee and players may register onsite at the event beginning at 8:15 a.m.  The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. with tip-off. This is a free event that will bode a March Madness bracket style basketball competition, free music/entertainment, and free food.

March 29, 2024 (Lemon Grove) -- Living in community is humankind’s primary means of survival. Our happiness, our well-being, and our purpose are all sustained by people working together in meaningful sympathy. Long-time San Diego County resident, Mrs. Charlene Waddell, knows from experience the importance of a healthy community, both in our general well-being and in the spirit of sacrifice. In 2006, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer. Her recovery required multiple surgeries that took parts of her colon, her liver, and her entire appendix. She required a lot of blood to survive. Thanks to the San Diego Blood Bank, which is there to help everyone in need of blood, Charlene got the precious blood she needed, and has made a welcome recovery.

March 20, 2024 (Lemon Grove) -- The San Diego County Sheriff's Department teamed up with its law enforcement partners to help get unwanted weapons off our streets through a Gun Safety Event in Lemon Grove on March 4.
 
A total of 184 unwanted firearms were turned in by the public during the event at the First Baptist Church of Lemon Grove.

SHARP-COLLINS SURPASSES VASQUEZ IN 79TH ASSEMBLY DISTRICT

March 16, 2024 (San Diego’s East County) – The 79th Assembly district race is still too close to call.  While La Mesa Councilman Colin Parent is still solidly in first place with 39.65% of the vote (21,745 votes). Educator Dr. LaShae Sharp-Collins has overtaken Lemon Grove Mayor Racquel Vasquez to move into second place.
 
Currently Sharp-Collins has 30.27% (16,597 votes), while Vasquez has 30.08% (16,494 votes).

HAYES OVERTAKES JUZA IN 75TH ASSEMBLY RACE; 79TH DISTRICT NARROWS TO SLIM 183-VOTE MARGIN IN RACE FOR RUNOFF SLOTS

March 9, 2024 (San Diego’s East County) – Latest election results released at 5 p.m. this evening show results have flipped in the Assembly district 75—with two Republicans now in the first and second place positions poised to run-off in November, if these positions hold.

Andrew Hayes, a  Lakeside school board member and long-time aide to Senator Brian Jones and Supervisor Joel Anderson, has narrowly pulled ahead of Democrat Kevin Juza, a business consultant. Carl DeMaio, founder of Reform California and conservative talk radio host, remains in first place. Currently DeMaio has 43.21%, Hayes 18.65% and Juza 18.18%. With just 555 votes separating Hayes and Juza, however, this race is still too close to call.  Three lesser-known candidates are trailing far behind.

The race has also tightened in the 79th Assembly District, where three Democrats are vying for the two top slots to advance to the November general election.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Lemon Grove substation was inundated by floodwaters, which caused heavy damage to the interior of the station.

VASQUEZ AND PARENT SPEAK OUT AS EARLY RESULTS SHOW THEM LIKELY HEADED TO RUN-OFF FOR ASSEMBLY RACE

March 6, 2024 (San Diego’s East County) -- La Mesa Councilman Colin Parent and Lemon Grove Mayor Racquel Vasquez are maintaining their first and and second place positions in the primary race for the 79th Assembly district seat. If their leads hold, the two East County elected official will run-off in the November general election, leaving their current council and mayoral positions to be filled in the November election, since both have terms of office ending after this year.

As of 11:30 p.m. on Election night, Parent has 41.01%, Vasquez 31.53% and Dr. LaShae Sharp-Collins, County Office of Education’s community engagement specialist and adjunct professor at SDSU trails close behind with 27.43%. 

As last night’s Lemon Grove City Council meeting adjourned, ECM’s  reporter approached the dais to let Vasquez know she was number two in the early voting numbers so far and asked if she would like to give a statement.

Refractive errors can be easily corrected with eyeglasses, yet millions of people living in low and middle-income areas lack access to basic eye care services. The Lions Club recognizes the urgent need for corrective lenses and collects usable eyeglasses in their communities. The lack of eyeglasses denies children and adults opportunities for education, employment, and a better quality of life.

February 22, 2024 (Lemon Grove) – Lemon Grove residents showed up at the City Council meeting on February 6 and again on February 20 to deliver a deluge of public comments voicing disappointment in the city’s response to major losses experienced by many residents and businesses from flooding on January 22.

A group of residents organized a series of clean-ups after the flood, because the city had none planned and residents were afraid if the debris was left to clog the drains further, they might see more damage. The same group created a video showing damage experienced by numerous residents and posted it online. The video shows Chollas Creek filled with palm and eucalyptus trees around the Toyota dealership.

February 3, 2023 (San Diego) --  The San Diego County Board of Supervisors on Jan. 30, 2024, took new actions to help people in communities flooded by the Jan. 22, 2024, torrential rains, including putting into place temporary additional tenant protection measures. The approved ordinance prohibits people who were affected by the floods from being evicted without just cause. The ordinance also restricts certain rent increases on eligible properties from January 22, 2024, to March 30, 2024.

The flood affected areas specified in the ordinance include residential units located in the following ZIP codes: 92102, 92104, 92105, 92111, 92113, 92114, 92115, (San Diego); 91977 (Spring Valley); 91950 (National City);91945 (Lemon Grove); and 92118 (Coronado).

LEMON GROVE MAN DEAD AFTER FREEWAY SHOOTING AND CRASH IN EL CAJON

January 31, 2024 (El Cajon) – A 20-year-old Lemon Grove man was shot and killed last night around 8:35 p.m. after exiting his vehicle, which had crashed and gone down an embankment off I-8 in El Cajon.

DRIVER HITS ROAD DEBRIS DURING STORM THEN STRIKES POLE; DIES AT SCENE

January 27, 2024 (Lemon Grove) -- Monday’s storm claimed the life of a motorist, Harold James Hooker, 67, in Lemon Grove.

He was driving a Honda CRV sport utility vehicle (SUV) southbound on Lemon Grove Avenue around 5:30 p.m. when he struck a large piece of concrete debris on the roadway during the storm. His vehicle traveled up an embankment and struck a utility pole.
