April 10, 2026 (San Diego) — The San Diego Padres might just be starting to pick up some steam.
In a finish that felt more like end-of-season heroics instead of an April extra-inning game, Padres infielder Xander Bogaerts sent a 1-2 slider over the left-field wall at Petco Park for a walk-off grand slam in the 12th inning of Thursday night's game against visiting Colorado, giving the Padres a thrilling 7-3 victory over the Rockies.
The Padres are now at 7-7, tied for second place with the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League West, as they continue play against the Rockies, who are in San Diego all weekend.
While Bogaerts provided the thunder on Thursday, relief pitcher Mason Miller continues to bring the lightning. The Padres' hard-throwing right-hander has been nearly unhittable. Miller has yet to allow a single run in his first 34 1/3 innings of the season. He has 76 strikeouts and has allowed only five hits -- all singles.
Yesterday, Miller closed out the game by striking out the side in the ninth inning on 10 pitches. One of Miller's fastballs was clocked at 103.4 miles per hour -- his fastest pitch of the regular season.
San Diego starting pitcher Randy Vasquez allowed one run on seven hits, striking out eight in 5 2/3 innings before making way for reliever David Morgan, who earned the win, retiring all five batters he faced.
The Padres also on Thursday unveiled the team's new "City Connect 2.0" jerseys, a vibrant tribute inspired by Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), sporting a bone-white base with marigold trim and a patch of a sugar-skull La Catrina wearing a traditional floral crown, surrounded by ofrenda candles set against an aqua backdrop.
The team will wear the new uniforms on Fridays at Petco Park, starting tonight. City Connect is a Major League Baseball initiative in partnership with Nike that features a series of alternate uniforms designed to celebrate the unique culture, history and community of each team's home city.
In what can only be considered a big win for local fans, the Padres have partnered with CBS 8 to broadcast 10 regular-season Saturday games for free over-the-air, including the game this Saturday, April 11 against the Rockies, starting at 5:15 p.m.). The Padres also play tonight at 6:40 p.m. on "Lowrider Night," and close the series at 1:10 p.m.
For those planning to leave East County and venture to Petco Park for games against Colorado, the San Diego Trolley is the way to go to avoid traffic and parking headaches.
The Orange Line boards in El Cajon and La Mesa and can be taken directly to the 12th & Imperial Transit Center. The Green Line boards at Santee or San Diego State and lets riders off at the Gaslamp Quarter Station.
